New Phishing Scam Targets Amazon Customers
A new email phishing scam is targeting Amazon customers and attempting to steal their credit card and social insurance numbers. According to Hoax-Slayer, versions of the following email have been sent to Amazon customers:
Dear Amazon.com Customer,
Amazon.com has recently updated our customer database and new security feature has been added to our website for effective shipping and order. Please click the link below to update your account information within 24-hours.
Thanks
Amazon.com
As with most phishing scams, the short email features both grammatical errors and an attempt to convey urgency as per the 24-hour time window. If you click the link in the email, you will be taken to a fake website that looks like Amazon.com The site asks users to enter their Amazon username and password, their name, address, credit card information and for US residents, their Social Insurance number. The site then re-directs victims to the real Amazon website to convince them that the completed security update was legitimate.
Customers of the giant online retailer have been the target of phishing scams in the past. One previous phishing email announced that the recipient had won a discount coupon for 90% off their Amazon purchases. Another popular phishing email attempted to scare Amazon customers by claiming that their account was temporarily frozen to protect it from attempted fraud and asked for the user to re-enter their contact information on a fake Amazon site. There are numerous Amazon phishing sites online which manage to look convincing and attempt to trick users into providing their information to criminals.
If you’ve been the victim of such a scam, change your Amazon username and password immediately and report the incident to the company at this link.
