How to Remove MediaPlayerPlus Ads and Coupons

by News Editor on May 22nd, 2014 in Security Tips.

MediaPlayerPlus by Freeven is an ad-supported cross web browser plugin that is detected as adware by many antivirus companies. It affects all the latest versions of Windows OS, and installs to Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer through user downloads as an additional pre-selected option. Main goal of such extensions is to send web traffic to partners in order to make profit. To reach its goal, MediaPlayerPlus has a permission to access your data on all websites, access your tabs and browsing activity:

If you have this program installed, you may notice several changes on your computer made without your permission. These changes affect task scheduler, windows registry, overall performance of your browsers etc. But the most annoying are advertisement coupons and banners on the top/right side/bottom of a webpage with a small note “Ads by MediaPlayerPlus” or “Powered by MediaPlayerPlus”, “Brought by MediaPlayerPlus”:

Webpages may load slower as different data is being transferred before your desired webpage opens. Also, while you are surfing the internet, MediaPlayerPlus can randomly open new browser windows asking you to install software updates, to test and increase your PC performance, etc. It may even block the whole page you attempt to open with an advertisement window, and you won’t be able to see desired content until you click on this ad:

There are 7 forced scheduled tasks assigned by MediaPlayerPlus that start at log of any user without his knowledge (it is usually done to avoid any UAC prompts, and it slows down your boot time).

It is based on Crossrider framework (monetization platform used to build cross browser extensions that provide context and in-line advertisements, as well as background processes monitoring etc.). Crossrider elements also take away free place on your hard drive.

If you want to remove MediaPlayerPlus from your PC, please follow the instructions below:

1.    From your desktop, click on Windows Start button and choose Control Panel option (Windows 8 users: right-click on ‘Windows Start’ icon (by default, it is located in the left bottom corner of your screen), and choose Control Panel from the context menu):
-    Click ‘Programs and Features’ (Windows Vista, 7 and 8), or ‘Add or Remove Programs’ (Windows XP).
-    Find ‘MediaPlayerPlus’ in the list, right-click on it and choose Uninstall.
-    Follow the uninstallation steps to remove the program.

2.    Please make sure that hidden files in your Windows Explorer are visible: Start –> Control Panel (Appearance and Personalization) –> Folder Options –> ‘View’ tab –> find ‘Hidden files and folders’ and choose an option ‘Show hidden files, folders, and drives’.

3.    Follow this path - C:\Users\adm\AppData\Local\Temp -> highlight all the files/folders here -> press ‘Shift’+’Delete’ and click ‘Yes’ to completely clean this folder.

4.    Restart your PC (it’s a very important step, because only during reboot most part of unnecessary files are deleted).

5.    Please find the directories below and make sure that all the MediaPlayerplus components are removed:
-    C:\Program Files\Uninstaller\Uninstall.exe
-    C:\Users\adm\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\majjphhgppkndjjkmhhnbgafooenebhd
-    C:\Users\adm\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5vba1m98.default\extensions\a9719e64-232b-4695-ae9c-a89cd7f2aa84@ca1279df-bc0d-44a8-97ef-19301c922b68.com

6.    Right click on ‘Computer’ icon on your desktop -> choose ‘Manage’ from the context menu -> expand ‘System Tools’, then ‘Task Scheduler’ menus -> click on ‘Task Scheduler Library’ and check whether you don’t have tasks named with random set of symbols here (on our test PCs, there were 7 tasks named ‘f05c1e2c-347c-417e-9c60-5b3052056acf…’ related to MediaPlayerPlus. To make sure you are deleting a correct task: highlight one for the inferior menu to appear -> in the ‘Actions’ tab ‘Details’ section you can see a path of program that is used for this task). If you find either of these, right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ from the drop-down menu:

7.    Finally, please remove MediaPlayerPlus traces from your registry. Before you start working with it, please make sure you understand how important this part of your PC is. You cannot restore data from here once you delete anything (‘Ctrl+Z’ never works in Registry Editor). And if you delete an incorrect component by mistake, it may damage your OS and make it unusable.
You should also know the difference between Registry Keys, Values and Values’ Data:

KEY: you can delete a key in this part of registry if its name exactly matches a program you don’t need anymore.

VALUE: you can delete all the value if its name exactly matches a program you don’t need anymore.

VALUE DATA*: you can modify/delete value data by double-clicking on the Value in question.

*Note: Be attentive while working with the Value data. Some harmful programs may inject their code to the system processes. In such case, you should remove a string of the harmful program only, and always leave the initial system path.

•    To open the Registry, press ‘Win+R’ keys on your keyboard -> in the opened window type regedit and press ‘Enter’.

•    Highlight 1st registry section called ‘Computer’ -> press Ctrl+F keys on your keyboard -> make sure Keys, Values, Data boxes in the ‘Find’ window are checked -> type MediaPlayerplus in the search field and click OK. Search result will highlight a key/value/data that contains MediaPlayerPlus components. If you find the exact key name of the program you want to remove, right click on the element in question and choose ‘Delete’. If it’s a value/data, right click on the value and choose ‘Modify’, then highlight harmful data and press ‘Delete’ key on your keyboard. Use F3 key to continue the search and to find all the necessary files.

•    Repeat the above instructions with the word iobwnedxjvdevl.

•    Exit the registry editor and reboot your PC again once the entire registry is checked.

Please take into consideration, that Ad-Aware Antivirus contains this adware in its definitions database, so you wouldn’t catch it if Ad-Aware was installed on your PC. Now please install Ad-Aware to check whether you have other infections:

•    Perform a full scan of your PC with Ad-Aware (following Ad-Aware User guide: ‘Scanning System’ -> ‘Running a scan’ section).

Finally, it is recommended to always keep your antivirus up-to-date with a real-time protection turned on, and perform weekly full scans to stay protected at all times.
