Father’s Day this year will be celebrated on June 17th. This is definitely the day to express feelings towards our dads for all of their love and support, frequently supplemented by the giving those exclusive gifts.

Sadly, spammers are taking part in this occasion too, in a very bad way.

Some of our dads aren’t the most computer savvy individuals. Sure they know how to use a PC, surf the internet, check their emails but can they differentiate a spam with a genuine email? Probably not…

Help your dad understand how to spot fraud on the Internet. Father’s Day scam is usually classified into promoting fake products, e-cards, dating, and gift card spam. Once a user (in this case your dad) clicks on a fake offer, they will be re-directed to a website where they will be asked to disclose personal information such as a credit card number or even their social security number!

A few things your dad needs to know:

• Legitimate companies and government agencies will never ask for passwords, social security number or credit card information via an email or pop up ads. If they are asking for this information your dad should be wary. NEVER respond to such messages.

• Do not click on any suspicious links received in unsolicited email messages. If he sees a message that smells ‘phishy’, tell him to leave it! If he clicks on the link, he could be unleashing viruses or spyware on his computer.

• Always determine the legitimacy of the email and offers first making any decisions.

• If the email or offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
