Todays security news: hackers are powerful, but the Internet is resilient.

Yesterdays attack against domain name system (DNS) servers, those that manage global computer traffic, has been pegged as one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002 (when all 13 of the Internets root DNS servers were hit).

The fact that most of us Internet users were not even aware of the attack is leading experts to highlight how stable the network has become, and to call for increased Internet security measures.

Hackers focused on servers and networks at the heart of the Internet that provide the main pipelines for the flow of data across the globe. The reports are still unfolding, but it looks like the attacks specifically targeted UltraDNS, a company that operates servers managing traffic for certain sites, including those that end in "org." At least three DNS root servers, including one operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, were bombarded with data that has been traced to South Korea.
