FBI Issues Public Alert on Scareware

by Erin on December 16th, 2009 in Industry and Security News, Rogues.

As you may have seen in our past news and reports, rogue security software, also known as scareware, is increasing rapidly online, creating one of today’s biggest security challenges for people as they use the Internet.

Now, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also taking note of this fact. For the first time, according to SC Magazine, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued a public warning about the threat of rogue anti-virus software.
In its news release on rogues, the FBI warns computer users to be wary of pop-ups that report security problems on their PC’s, and estimates that this type of malware has resulted in more than $150 million in losses to victims.

To learn more, take a look at the FBI’s press release or the IC3 alert. You can also visit the Lavasoft Malware Labs’ Rogue Gallery to see a comprehensive list of current fake security programs, so you know what to avoid.
