New Rogue: PCAntispyware2010

by Albin on August 3rd, 2009 in Rogues.

A clone of HomeAntivirus2010 has now been released. This time, the fraud tool is named PCAntispyware2010.

As usual, keep an eye out for rogues like this one!

Two new rogue security applications have been released:

WindowsAntivirusPro

The” average Joe” probably sees the word "virus" as a generic term for all current threats out there in the wild. The reality is much different. There are a lot of categories which must be mentioned in this context.  The word "virus" should not be used as a catchall term for malicious infections. A virus is actually a malicious file which has the ability to infect/add malicious code to other files; we currently see a downward trend of this type of infections.

New Rogue! XP Deluxe Protector

by Albin on June 9th, 2009 in Rogues.

XP Deluxe Protector is a new rogue application. It will show false scanning results to entice users to purchase their software.

Since the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico in April, the amount of newly registered domains related to the disease has increased significantly, making hypochondriacs a potential target for villains. Playing on peoples' fear in this way is a classic example of how to perform fraud. In fact, the false propaganda on swine flu domains is comparable with the technique that fake-scanners use.  The sites are created solely to bring feelings of emergency, fear and panic to visitors, and the overall ambition is to make people pay for a product.

New Rogue: SecureAntiVirusPro

by Albin on May 18th, 2009 in Rogues.

Another rogue anti-spyware application has been released. This one is called SecureAntiVirusPro. It will give exaggerated threat reports on the compromised computer, then ask the user to purchase a registered version to remove threats which don't really exist.

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) have become a massive industry over the last decade. World of Warcraft alone has approximately 10 million active users. (1) That's more than Sweden’s total population! A lot of users and money involved means that malware writers have a good opportunity to earn some "easy cash".

While traveling in Asia, I recently experienced extremely low security levels at an Internet café. I went in to check my e-mail and made a security check on the Windows OS. I opened Windows Task Manager and looked for suspicious applications running, thinking that probably thousands of users must have used this machine.

New Rogue!! WiniBlueSoft

by Albin on April 23rd, 2009 in Rogues.

Yet another rogue anti-spyware application has been released. This time it's called WiniBlueSoft.

The nature of malware infections has changed during the past years. A long time ago, malware and viruses were spread in much less sophisticated ways. (1) Times are not the same anymore because malware authors constantly invent new intellectual ways to compromise machines.

PAntispyware09 is a new rogue anti-spyware application and a clone of MsAntispyware2009. It will give exaggerated threat reports on the compromised computer, then ask the user to purchase a registered version to remove threats which do not exist.

Antispyware Pro 2009 is a new rogue anti-spyware application. It will give exaggerated threat reports on the compromised computer then ask the user to purchase a registered version to remove threats which don't exist.
