How to Remove Optimum PC Boost

by News Editor on October 23rd, 2014 in Security Tips.

Optimum PC Boost by OptiSoft LLC is a system optimizer program that pretends to “fix all of the common problem areas to boost your computer’s performance”. Its trial version has a limited functionality though; to optimize your PC, you would need to purchase a license.

Even though it is no doubt a good application, however, some of OptiSoft’s LLC partners are using dishonest tactics into tricking users to install the product – bundling to free software using pay-per-install marketing method. So Optimum PC Boost may sneak to your PC as a part of another installation without you noticing this. And if so, it starts advertising itself every time you launch your PC.

OptimumPCBoost.exe process launches showing a window with number of errors found by program. So if you are not aware when and why this software came to your computer, it can be considered as a self-advertisement.

It is not that easy to simply close the start-up Optimum PC Boost window:

•    There are no usual ‘Minimize’ and ‘Close’ buttons in the right upper corner of the window;
•    If you decide to ignore this notification, it still stays on top of other programs’ windows until you choose either of 2 options;
•    The only button ‘LATER’ that seems to be able to close this warning, also opens the main program window.

When you have the main window opened, you cannot close it in a general way: click on a right upper ‘X’ button opens a new dialog window reminding you about errors. And if you choose a default ‘OK’ option, the same main window opens again with an option to buy a license key (at the same time, a checkout webpage opens offering you to complete a sign-up form). So to finally close Optimum PC Boost, you have to manually choose ‘Exit…’ option in the first dialog window:

2 scheduled tasks are assigned by the program during installation – Optimum_Daily and Optimum_LogOn – to run the application without user's initiation. It is usually done to avoid any UAC prompts, and it slows down your boot time.

The Publisher of Optimum PC Boost disclaims any responsibility for possible PC damages (see below quotes from the program’s EULA):
“You acknowledge that Optimum PC Boost is a system utility, and as such can make irreversible changes to the state of computer on which it is run and that Optisoft LLC cannot accurately predict or ensure the outcome in all possible scenarios.”
Optimum PC Boost is licensed "as-is" and defects may cause it to not function properly. Although not intended, as with all computer software, it is possible a defect could cause your computer to function improperly. You bear the risk of using optimum pc boost. Optisoft llc gives no express warranties, guarantees or conditions.”

Optimum PC Boost Manual Removal Instructions

Note. This is a self-help guide. Use it at your own risk. This article is provided "as is" and to be used for information purposes.

1.    Before you start, please make sure you are logged as a system administrator. Also, please save a copy of your important files to external hard drive/cloud storage.

2.    From your desktop, click on Windows Start button and choose Control Panel option (Windows 8 users: right-click on ‘Windows Start’  icon (by default, it is located in the left bottom corner of your screen), and choose Control Panel from the context menu):

•    Click ‘Programs and Features’ under the ‘Programs’ category (Windows Vista, 7 and 8)/‘Add or Remove Programs’ (Windows XP),
•    Please find Optimum PC Boost in the list, right click on it, choose ‘Uninstall’ and wait a few moments to complete the process.
•    If you receive a window below, please choose a default option ‘Automatically close applications…’ and click on ‘OK’:

3.    Please make sure that hidden files in your Windows Explorer are visible: Start –> Control Panel (Appearance and Personalization) –> Folder Options –> ‘View’ tab –> find ‘Hidden files and folders’ and check a box ‘Show hidden files, folders, and drives’.

4.    Follow this path - C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp (XP users: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Temp) -> highlight all the files/folders here -> press ‘Shift’+’Delete’ and click ‘Yes’ to completely clean this folder (Note. If you receive messages that some files cannot be removed, just skip the file in question).

5.    Please find the directories below and make sure that all the Optimum PC Boost traces are removed:
C:\Program Files(x86)\ Optimum PC Boost
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Optimum PC Boost

6.    Right click on ‘My Computer’ located on your desktop -> choose ‘Manage’ from the context menu -> expand ‘System Tools’ and ‘Task Scheduler’ menus -> click on ‘Task Scheduler Library’ -> once a list of tasks appears in the right part of the window, find 2 tasks shown on a picture below -> right-click on each one and choose ‘Delete’ from the context menu:

7.    Now, please install Ad-Aware to make sure you don’t have any infections on your machine:

•    Click here to download Ad-Aware, and follow installation instructions from Ad-Aware User Guide (‘Installation and Uninstallation’ -> ‘Ad-Aware Install’ section).
•    Perform a full scan of your PC with Ad-Aware (following Ad-Aware User guide: ‘Scanning System’ -> ‘Running a scan’ section).
•    Restart your PC.

8.    If you continue facing issues with Optimum PC Boost, please remove its traces from your registry. Before you start, please make sure you understand how important this part of your PC is. You cannot restore data from here once you delete something (‘Ctrl+Z’ never works in Registry Editor). And if you delete an incorrect component by mistake, it may damage your OS, or even make it unusable.
To open the Registry, press ‘Win+R’ keys on your keyboard -> in the opened window type regedit and press ‘Enter’.
•    Highlight main registry section called ‘Computer’ -> press Ctrl+F keys on your keyboard -> make sure Keys, Values, Data check-boxes in the ‘Find’ window are checked -> type optimumpcboost in the search field and click OK. Search results will highlight a key/value/data that contains Optimum PC Boost components. If you find the exact match with the name of program you want to remove, right click on the element in question and choose ‘Delete’ from the context menu.
•    Use F3 key to continue the search and to find all the necessary files.
•    Exit the registry editor.
•     Reboot your PC.

Lastly, it is recommended to always keep your antivirus program up-to-date with a real-time protection turned on, and perform weekly full scans to stay protected at all times.
