Advertisers At It Again?

In January, we brought you news of the N.Y., USA settlement that held advertisers, not just third party media buyers, responsible for ads delivered through adware.

But we haven't seen the end of advertisers displaying online ads through software installed without computer users? consent. Researcher Ben Edelman says that two of the companies in that N.Y. settlement have yet to sever their ties with spyware vendors.

Edelman reports on his website that ads for Travelocity and Cingular are still being served via adware, and he has the evidence to prove it. He claims to have tracked more than a dozen examples of spyware served ads from the two companies since the N.Y. settlement.

Cingular Wireless and Travelocity have countered that they have policies not to advertise with adware and spyware firms. In his report, Edelman notes that advertisers need not just good intentions, but actual enforcement to carry out those intentions.

We'll hopefully see progress in the area of law enforcement soon. Today, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection will meet for a hearing on combating spyware. We'll keep you posted with news on the debate.
