You may remember hearing the news, which broke last fall, on the arrests of alleged members of Dark Market, a message forum for online criminals where stolen information, as well as tools to facilitate online fraud, was bought and sold. A two year undercover operation by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) resulted in nearly 60 arrests worldwide, and the prevention of $70 million in potential losses, according to the FBI.

For anyone interested in taking a closer look at the inner workings of a cyber crime op, CNET News published an interview this past week with the undercover FBI agent whose infiltration of the group was key in exposing it – as well as some very interesting information on the nature of today’s cyber thieves.

Take a look at the Q & A.

As reported previously, Google Street View was launched in Sweden on April 21. Yesterday, BBC News reported that Greece has put "Hellenic-power-assisted brakes" on the Google camera fitted "surveillance" units while the privacy issues of the Google Street View service are debated.

This week’s proof of the fast-acting, opportunistic nature of today’s spammers and cyber scammers:

While the phrase “swine flu” has reportedly not been seen in spammed messages prior to the start of this week, an estimated 5 percent of junk mail clogging inboxes around the world now refers to it, according to industry stats cited in a Guardian.co.uk article.

We’ve all heard of the basic ways that we can each do our part to help the environment: plant trees, use less electricity, recycle.  According to a new study, we may soon be adding something not quite so mundane to that list: use a spam filter.

Google Street View has now - starting Tuesday, April 21, 2009 - been launched in Sweden. Google's 360 degrees horizontal and 290 degrees vertical filming may catch you in action when you are taking your daily walk on the boulevard! Google Street View, a feature associated with Google Earth and Google Maps, was first launched in May 2007, when Google´s Chevy Cobalt units with roof-mounted cameras became part of the city images.

Zango, a long-time adversary for Ad-Aware, is closing the doors. There is thus far conflicting news out there. The Register said yesterday that they are bankrupt. NetworkWorld said on Monday that they were purchased by Blinkx. There is also the personal blog posting of Zango co-founder Ken Smith that is worth the read if you are really interested.

You may have seen the headlines last week about a series of worm attacks on Twitter. As we know that many of you use the site (and maybe even follow the team here at Lavasoft on it) we’d like to take a moment to clarify what it was and how you can stay safe.

The men behind The Pirate Bay were today found guilty of aiding and abetting illegal downloads of copyrighted materials via their BitTorrent Tracker site. The accused were all sentenced to one year's imprisonment by the Stockholm District Court.

While April 1 may have passed without the Conficker botnet activating an ‘armageddon-like’ payload, as some reports speculated, Conficker is still a threat that the world is watching.

Conficker is now not only making headlines for the malware’s latest actions and expectations, but it’s also making waves due to how computer users have responded to this threat and others like it.

In addition to our post last week, here’s another quick bit of security information for all of you social networking enthusiasts:

There’s some fresh news from the Net this week on combating Koobface – the badly behaving worm seen spreading through social networking sites.

Social networks – whether you love them for the ease and ability to speak your mind, or haven’t completely warmed to them because of the opportunities they open up for scammers – there’s no denying their increasing popularity.

In light of that fact, we’ve featured social networking communities in the April issue of Lavasoft News. If you use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or any of the other countless networking sites, this month’s safety news and Lavasoft Malware Labs threat information is not-to-be-missed.

It’s not the kind of record any of us working to help computer users’ combat security and privacy threats, like our team here at Lavasoft, hopes to see being set:
